MAS JUNY, PLATJA DE CASTELL
THE JEWEL OF THE COSTA BRAVA
Mas Juny is a historic fortified masia (traditional Catalan farmhouse) located near the Platja de Castell beach in Palamós, within Spain's Baix Empordà region. Dating back to the 16th century, this property features a cylindrical defense tower, indicative of the area's historical need for protection against pirate incursions during that period.
In the early 20th century, Mas Juny gained prominence when renowned Catalan painter Josep Maria Sert acquired and restored it around 1930. Under his ownership, the estate became a vibrant cultural hub, hosting illustrious figures such as Coco Chanel, Marlene Dietrich, and Salvador Dalí. Notably, Sert constructed a small hut on the property intended as a studio for Dalí, though it's unclear how frequently the artist used it.
Following a personal tragedy—the death of Sert's brother-in-law, Prince Alexis Mdivani, in a car accident near Albons—the estate was sold in 1940 to Alberto Puig Palau. Puig Palau continued the tradition of hosting prominent personalities, including Ava Gardner, Frank Sinatra, and Grace Kelly, further cementing Mas Juny's reputation as a gathering place for artists and celebrities.
Today, Mas Juny stands as a testament to the rich cultural and artistic heritage of the Costa Brava region, reflecting its storied past and the notable figures who once graced its halls, though today it lies in ruins and awaits someone ready to make an offer the current owners cannot refuse.
